ICALM PURPOSE & GOALS
Longevity medicine is now a reality! Longevity medicine describes a universe that combines nutriceuticals, anti-aging hormone therapies, reversal of protein cross-linkages, genetic therapy, and much more. Within our lifetimes, longevity medicine will be able to arrest, if not reverse, the aging process. With the media increasingly focusing on events ranging from cloning to the identification of exotic gene sequences, the time has come to run for the longevity train because it’s already left the station.
The new International College of Advanced Longevity Medicine (ICALM) has been created to provide education, training and certification in the field of advanced anti-aging/longevity medicine for all health professionals. To achieve this goal, ICALM will incorporate potentially beneficial diagnostic and therapeutic modalities from every known school of therapy and medical thought -- allopathic, Oriental, homeopathic, naturopathic, and ayurvedic medicines – and link it with the latest breakthroughs in today’s anti-aging research and biotechnology.
ICALM represents the first convergence of these different (but not antagonistic) philosophies and approaches to optimum health and longevity, with the specific intent to achieve maximum extension of useful life span while optimizing health to realize improved quality of life, not just quantity. Using this combined storehouse of knowledge will enable ICALM to establish a truly new and comprehensive approach to optimal health and longevity.
ICALM (1) is a member-controlled, nonprofit organization; (2) will adhere to the highest ethical standards; (3) will hold annual elections of officers; and (4) will provide strict and open financial accountability to its members. Garry F. Gordon, MD, DO, MD(H), is the founding president of ICALM.
ICALM will work with a newly-established parallel independent board -- the International Board of Advanced Longevity Medicine (IBALM) -- that oversees the credentialing of physicians and other allied health professionals in anti-aging/longevity medicine. Norbert J. Becquet, MD, is the inaugural president of IBALM. With ICALM and IBALM, not only MD’s and DO’s, but all health professionals are eligible for training and credentialing in advanced longevity medicine.
ICALM will provide training courses in various longevity-related specialty areas, including (but not limited to): endocrine, genetic, oxidative and environmental therapies, chelation, bariatric and orthopedic medicine, homeopathy and naturopathy, all aspects of allopathic medicine, nutrition, exercise, and other areas to be determined.
Training will take place at an annual two-day workshop conference, this year scheduled for May 9 to 10, providing educational opportunities for those interested, including our colleagues who may be traveling from foreign countries to receive the training ICALM/IBALM is offering in the international marketplace. Additionally, ICALM will host one scientific conference per year at our fall meeting, now scheduled for Oct. 31 to Nov. 1.
ICALM will also meet the needs of our allied health professional colleagues, from physician assistants and registered dietitians to chiropractors, naturopaths, dentists, etc. These health professionals will set up separate sub-boards in each of their medical disciplines under IBALM. Eventually, operating within the regulations applicable to their profession in their residing state, they can take a different written examination and receive certification from their sub-board with IBALM’s approval to show they have specialized knowledge in advanced anti-aging/longevity medicine.
We foresee ICALM becoming the pre-eminent professional organization in the field of anti-aging/longevity medicine.
As physicians and health professionals, we routinely employ the latest and best in medical testing procedures that we are aware of in our current practices. Now, by combining these with the biomarkers of aging due to be released in May 1998 by the National Institute of Aging, we should eventually determine which combination of therapies for longevity medicine are most cost effective for each individual.
It is a major undertaking to develop realistic longevity-based protocols both for the protection of the public and for the accumulation of scientifically based clinical information to help us move forward in our chosen new specialty. Preliminary determinations must be made regarding the effectiveness of the new biomarkers in human aging, and which of the exciting and innovative diagnostic tests available today may be even more beneficial and cost effective when combined with the NIA recommendations.
This becomes an even more complex challenge as we learn that we will need vastly differing protocols for the different categories of patients that will seek our services. While it may be difficult to obtain unanimous agreement as to what constitutes a standardized anti-aging/longevity protocol, we believe that we must establish at least minimal standards and criteria for practitioners who specialize in this exciting new field of medicine. If we do not, we invite abuse of the public from those who may not clearly think out the ramifications of their testing and treatment programs, as well as loss of the excellent public relations status that anti-aging/longevity medicine currently enjoys.
Another important focus of ICALM will be to develop comprehensive biomarker tests and aging measurement test batteries to evaluate the progression of the aging process, as well as to determine the efficacy (or lack thereof) of various interventions. This will, in turn, accelerate the development and refinement of effective anti-aging therapies to promote maximum longevity.
As health professionals, we have experienced that some of our therapies have worked dramatically for some of our patients but not for everyone with the same complaint, partially because of biochemical individuality as well as other differences that are recognized better in other forms of traditional medicine. In order to optimize health to the highest potential for any patient seeking our services in longevity medicine, it is of the utmost importance that we begin to function as a comprehensive and cohesive group.
Since it is simply not possible to provide every potentially beneficial therapy from any one facility, this may mean referring some patients to some of our colleagues when appropriate, in order to provide the broadest-based health-promoting programs possible for all of our longevity patients.
ICALM will serve many functions, but first and foremost our job is to educate the health professionals who are interested in anti-aging/longevity medicine and thus to raise the standards of practice in the anti-aging field.
