The Fallacy Of Complexity

Of the many reasons why the information about water contained in this Book has not had wider acceptance, the unfortunate complexity of the writing style of the primary researcher, Dr. F. Batmanghelidj, is only exceeded by the difficulty for Americans in pronouncing his name.  Click on the icon to see a reference to his Book.  Dr. F. Batmanghelidg, Book: The Body's Many Cries for Water  This page, however, is NOT about him or his book, but rather about his style of writing.

Most medical researchers suffer from the same problem.  I call it the Fallacy Of Complexity!  Many writers understand the complex nature of their material and think to explain to their readers by expressing that complexity in terms which THEY understand.  That is usually fatal!

This is not a trivial point, but one of the main points of failure in public education. When a book is written which violates the most basic principles of educational writing, then the information in that book may be lost forever.

In Dr. Batmanghelidj’s book, Your Body’s Many Cries For Water, the author of the Foreword suggests:

When you read this book in its entirety, you will see that Dr. Batmanghelidj has carefully reduced complex relationships in our systems to understandable non-technical language.

This is simply not true! This Book is written without regard to most basic principles of writing-- that is, the student will find that this book CANNOT be understood without hundreds of hours of study of earlier and more basic subjects. It is more than shameful because the information is so vital!

Here is an example from page 21 of the Book -- the so-called non-technical language:

Scientific research shows that water has many other properties besides being a solvent and a means of transport. It has a firmly established and essential hydrolytic role in all aspects of body metabolism -- water-dependent chemical reactions (hydrolysis). At the cell membrane, the osmotic flow of water can generate "hydroelectric" energy (voltage gradient) that is stored in the energy pools in form of ATP and used for elemental (cation) exchanges, particularly in neuro transmission. ATP is a chemical source of energy in the body. The energy generated by water helps manufacture ATP.

I suggest to you that the above paragraph, appearing early in his Book, presents apparently brilliant concepts from Dr. Batmanghelidj, but that virtually no one except a trained biochemist would understand this so-called non-technical language.

Furthermore, if you don’t know the basic laws about study, you would start to read this paragraph and give up without knowing why you gave up.

Here are the problems:

First, there are words used which are not defined in the context.  Furthermore any fair range of "average readers" would not know these words. If the reader has a very high self-discipline, he would look up every such word in a good dictionary, but he would soon find, with this material, that he would need to go beyond dictionaries to text books, and by then he would have a biochemistry degree, not an understanding of the simple truth being reported about water.

Here is how American Philosopher, L. Ron Hubbard, writes on this:

"An entirely different set of physiological reactions brought about by a bypassed definition . . . the undefined word . . . This one of the misunderstood definition is so much more important.  It's the make-up of human relations, the mind and subjects.  It establishes aptitude and lack of aptitude, and it's what the psychologist have been trying to test for years without recognizing what it was.  It's the definitions of words.  The misunderstood word . . . produces such a vast panorama of mental effects that it itself is the prime factor involved with stupidity . . ."  L. Ron Hubbard, Barriers To Study

Next, the highly technical words are heaped upon one another -- a book to be studied must approach new words, and new concepts on a gradient. One datum must be presented in such a way that it can be experienced and thoroughly understood before another new datum is introduced.

"The remedy for this one of too steep a gradient is cutting back.  Find out when he was not confused on the gradient, then what new action he understood well.  Just before he was all confused, what did he understand well -- and then we find out that he didn't understand it well."  L. Ron Hubbard, Barriers To Study

Finally, these complex terms need non-technical examples, or pictures, or, when possible, models. The lack of mass to balance the significance of the material makes it all the harder to comprehend.

"Education in the absence of the mass in which the technology will be involved is very hard on the student. . . . Photographs help and motion pictures would do pretty good, as they are a sort of promise of hope of the mass, but the printed page and the spoken word are not a substitute for a tractor if he's studying about tractors." L. Ron Hubbard, Barriers To Study

Please relieve yourself of any guilt when you read books written such as this one by Dr. Batmanghelidj -- they are NOT written with an understanding of the technology of study or writing.

Based on the above reference the need for "mass" along with words, I have designed this Third (Electronic) Edition of Life Flow One, The Solution For Heart Disease, with more than 500 illustrations.  The doctor who wrote this material about water has written other extremely valuable information about cholesterol -- and it is actually quite readable. So, being "readable" is not a guarantee you will be "read."  It also takes promotion. Click here to read some of his work on cholesterol -- vital data.

Remember, a picture IS worth a thousand words. Consider the picture below.

Illustrations add to the time it takes to download a page onto your screen.  I've tried to balance the value of the mass with the speed of download by making every illustration contain the least amount of memory requirement possible.

That is one of the pieces of "writing technology" that seems to me to be necessary for writing on the web.  "Don't forego mass in order to achieve speed of download -- but acknowledge the importance of download time by formatting illustrations to take the least practical time to load!"

A Picture Is Worth A Thousand Words!

Can you possibly forget this picture?  A good picture IS worth a thousand words!

The "mass" of a tractor, if you are studying tractors, is probably worth a thousand pictures!

One of the most important books in many years.  This author has impressive and very practical credentials.  His study and writing about water stands alone in the literature.  I found this information SO important that I have devoted more than 60 pages of this Book to this subject -- with full credit to Dr. Batmanghelidj.  Click Here to review the entry in the Bibliography.
