Chapter Sixteen: The Mechanics And Simplicities Of Water

Viewpoint From The Top!

Picture two men, each of them has driven his car to the very top of a high mountain. They stand on that top, separated by only 25 feet.

From this mountain top one can see vast distances of mountains and valleys -- of clouds and trees -- or soaring eagles and fluttering butterflies.

Both men are facing the same direction, yet one sees vast expanses of beauty while the other, a few feet behind, inside the men’s rest room, sees only the toilet!

It’s a matter of viewpoint. Don’t judge your fellow or his data until you get in his same viewpoint. Come with me, try out a new viewpoint! You are almost there -- it may take nothing more than a shift of a couple feet!

What Is Water?

Almost everyone "knows" that water is made up of two elements -- hydrogen and oxygen. You could go on to learn much more about the chemistry of water -- and fascinating it is.

You could learn that water covers most of earth’s surface, and that only a small percentage of all the water on earth is fresh water. In fact, pages could be filled with useless data like this.

It may be interesting, but it is not useful. You can get eaten alive by a hunger for useless facts. Let’s look for stuff you can apply to your life.

Let’s skip most of this useless data, and dive immediately into the role of water within the body.

First Fact -- Lots Of Water

The first thing to know about water in the body is that there is a lot of it. When we see blood, we may not think of that as mostly water, but it is. In fact the body is about 75% water and 25% solid materials. So, water is the most important component of the body in terms of quantity.

Next, the liquid that goes through your arteries is almost all water. There are blood cells in the arteries, and there is the fluid in which the blood cells float. Both of these are mostly water.

The blood cell, itself, is mostly water. It is a sack of water floating in a stream of water.

The liquid outside the cells is usually called the serum. It is mostly water.

How much water?

More than 90%! For both the contents of the cell and the liquid in which the cells float.

There is also an entire system of another liquid -- called the lymph system -- again virtually 100% water. The lymph moves around inside the body carrying away toxins from places they shouldn’t be at.

So, the body is mostly water!

But, when we think of the inside of the body, and liquids, the most familiar liquid is certainly the blood.

See the chart just below for the system of veins and arteries that make up the blood circulation system.

This chart shows the complexity of different aspects of blood circulation.  Fortunately, you can't quite read the many fancy words around the body in the chart. Those are the fancy words that scientists use to put labels on different tubes in the body -- tubes that carry the water.

The many complex words in this chart provide an example of bad writing style for an average reader -- see the comments in Appendix One.  The style may be fine for a doctor, but when YOU are exposed to words like these (without warning) you tend to wander off, mentally, from the material.  Click here to see other images of the "tubes" that carry the water in the body.

First Myth -- Water Is Only A Carrier

Next, most people don’t worry much about what water does in the body, but those few who do, including almost all doctors and scientists, consider that water’s primary role in the body is to serve as a means of transporting the really important stuff to where it needs to go.

In this view, the blood is seen as a stream of water containing red blood cells and a variety of other cells and items which do the important job of keeping the body alive and providing for its health.

You will read that the blood is about 94% water, but you will also read that it is the 6% of "other things" which is the important part -- that the water simply serves to carry the other things from here to there.

It is a deceptive datum that the only role of the water in the body is to dissolve solids and carry them to where they are needed.

The truth of this is that the water, itself, functions in major ways to provide for the function of a healthy body.

There are, also, many far more exotic view of water -- as a living substance for instance -- and as the source for power far greater and less dangerous, and less costly, than nuclear power -- click here.

Second Fact -- A Sensation Of Hunger Is Often A Disguised Thirst

One of the major premises of this Section is that you should normally perceive a sensation of thirst as different from the sensation of hunger. Both of these are too often confused with the sensation of social pleasure in the act of eating and drinking, or from the sensation of taste of food and drink.  In fact, the biggest factor in diet is actually the social pressures.  You eat WITH someone, and it is an event.  The quality and type of food you put into your body are often very much junior to the importance of eating WITH someone, and therefore, eating for the social pleasure, not for the body's needs.

You thrive on sensations -- you love them! Sensation is what you get paid in. You think you get paid with money? Well, money is mostly used to buy sensations.  [Karl Note:  I have developed this idea much further in my major work on diet. Click here to start reading that material.]

The body creates sensations for various types of need which we then gratify with food, drink, sex, sleep, or whatever else seems called for. You respond to need sensations by eating and drinking. The body responds by giving back to you various pleasure sensations.

Here’s where the villain enters this picture. Picture a body whose messages on sensation are all screwed up. In this example when the body really needs water, it sends out a message which you perceive as one of hunger. You feed the body some food. You get some immediate enjoyment from the taste and the social surroundings, but if your body really needed water, food is not often a very good source for it.

So, the body, realizing that it did not get the water it needed, sends out an even stronger message for more water. You perceive it as a sensation of more hunger and aggravate the problem by eating more food when the body simply needed water. You sure can get fat!

What is wrong with the water in foods? Well, for one thing, the foods all too often carry along with them many unwanted chemicals. It seems that many of these chemicals make the water that is available in the food not useful to the body. In many cases, these chemicals increase the body’s need for water, while giving the body the message that no water has yet arrived.

Even when the food is pure and fresh, the body needs to use water to process the food in the stomach. There may, or may not, be enough water in the food you eat to process that same food -- probably not.

There is another whole set of messages the body creates -- sensations of pain such as arthritis, back aches, angina pain and others. These are sensations telling us that the body needs some attention. All too often we respond to these messages as a call for changes in diet or drugs. Indeed, drugs are the universal solution to pain and disease -- the doctor tells you to change your life style, but he knows you won’t.

That’s fine because when you feel guilty for not changing your diet, the doctor has a pill that will help. The pills are expensive, always more expensive than the changed diet, but since you now feel guilty about your inability to discipline yourself, you decide it’s OK to spend the money on pills.

What if most of those pain messages were simply very advanced signs that the body needs more water -- that the body is asking you just to drink more water?

What if every one of those new diet fads, and every one of those drugs just further mess up the water system of the body?

What if your body were starving for water while getting fat with stuff that doesn’t do it any good, and getting sicker from drugs that create more problems than they solve?

What if?

Water in the body is normally in the form of blood going through the arteries and veins, and also there is water inside each cell. Thus, blood cells contain water and blood cells travel in a stream of water that contains so many blood cells that it looks red. It is really nothing more than a stream of water with red-colored and water-filled cells floating along in it. You have more water in your lymph system, and lots of it in your intestines and other organs.

Karl Loren Personal Breakthrough!

After learning about the importance of water I started on a personal campaign to drink lots. I have been doing that for about ten months at the time of writing this Second Edition of this Book. During that time I hardly ever measured the amount of water I drank.

I started this process with a recurrent back pain that just wouldn’t respond to chiropractic treatment -- bad enough pain that I often had to take pain killers.

I don’t have those pains anymore -- and believe that it was just drinking water that did it.

So, I had a considerable incentive to drink water. The pain went away within a few hours of starting to drink lots of water. It came back, during those first few weeks, when I hadn’t been drinking as much as before.

So, when I got back onto the heavy water usage, the back got better and has stayed that way.

Now, with about ten months experience on this I can report my personal changes, tell you about the small number, so far, that I have told about water, and their successes, but it is this Book which I hope will awaken thousands of new people to the joys of health through water.

There are two very specific changes I want to tell you about -- because I think you can experience these same changes.

Sensation Of Thirst

I understood the theory that my body was giving me sense messages which I perceived as "hunger," but which were really cries for water. I started drinking water whenever I had those sensations.  I had been reading a book, "Your Body's Many Cries For Water," image on the left.

But, then I started getting a NEW sensation -- one that I had never ever had before. I have decided that this new sensation is my thirst sensation coming back to life! Let me tell you about it so you can look for something similar in yourself, or write to me with whatever report you wish about what changes you have observed in yourself from drinking more water.

There is a particular sensation I have now when I think the body wants water.

First, it is an almost metallic taste, and a subtle "pressure" feeling, both in the back of the roof of the mouth. There is also a sensation of "dry" in the mouth even though there is plenty of moisture in the mouth when I have this sensation. This sensation is certainly not painful, but it is NOT a pleasure sensation. It is a slightly uncomfortable sensation.

It doesn’t go away immediately upon drinking water. My theory is that this new sensation stays with me, now, until I have drunk enough water, not just a first sip.

What brings on this sensation, and how it turns off are another great success I’ve had.

I’m probably like you, my diet has not been the best!

Diet Breakthrough

I found, after being on heavy water intake for several weeks, that my appetite changed. I was no longer as interested in desserts or large helpings at meals.

I had lost all desire for soda and had a greatly reduced interest in anything to drink other than water.

But, there were times when the old desire for sugar sensations would get so strong that I would pig out! I would eat junk food, top it off with ice-cream, and eat more of this stuff than any reasonable man should. I loved the sensations of all those foods.

But, what I noticed was that I had this very strong "thirst sensation" the next morning. It was as if the body was saying to me:

Well, you ate all that junk and I need a lot of water to wash out the toxins. Drink!

This strong sensation for water seems to only happen several hours after, or the next day after, I’ve eaten a large amount of foods that I know are not really very good for me.  Many foods, particularly highly processed foods, leave toxic residues in the body -- these residues cause back pain, among other things.  You think your back hurts!   Drink more water -- flush out the toxins and feel better.

I believe my body is now cleaner and is ABLE to respond to junk food poisoning in a way that it never could before. It is as if the body was so overloaded with junk food toxins that the body could no longer even protest -- there was not even any pain.

Now, with the body cleaned out a lot more, it seems that a small amount of junk food toxins causes this adverse reaction of the thirst sensation -- telling me that the body needs to have more water -- to wash out those toxins.  Another Book by the same author on water -- I recommend it if you want more details on how drinking more water can help you get rid of back pain.

I’ve also discovered that I, like many people, can’t tolerate carbohydrates. I thought that eating lots of fruit was good for me. I thought that eating pasta was good for me. I knew that eating sweet rolls was NOT good, and sometimes sinned in that direction, but I ate lots of fruit.

I was feeling better, but not losing weight. I then realized that all that wonderful fruit simply turns into sugar in the body, and that it was possible for a body to be unable to process all that sugar -- whether it came from sweet rolls or fruit.  Click here to read more than 3000 pages of the Karl Loren diet.

I got onto a high protein, low carbohydrate diet, along with lots of water and I’m now getting amazing results.

I used to think there were no immediate adverse consequences to a bad diet. Sure, I would get fat, but there was no pain or upset that came along within a few hours, or even within one day, so I would enjoy the sensation of the food today, and not worry about the "fat" next year.

After several months, just drinking more water, I found that I could change my diet even more -- to cut out all sugars, even to greatly reduce carbohydrates and increase proteins in my diet. There is another entire book to be written on this subject of bodies which are intolerant of carbohydrates, but it has already been written by Dr. Robert Atkins (The Atkins New Diet Revolution, published by M. Evans & Company, Inc., New York.)  [Karl Note added on December 6, 2000:  At the time I wrote this Book, Life Flow One, I believed that Dr. Robert Atkins' diet was the best around.  I have since changed my mind considerably.   At the time I insert this note here I have already written more than 3000 pages on the web about the "Karl Loren Diet," and encourage you to click here to read starting on the first page.  Also, I have become critical of the Atkins Diet (even though I have used it personally, and recommended it to many others), and one excellent critique of his diet can be found by clicking here.)

Try drinking more water, and try eliminating sugar, and reducing carbohydrates. You may experience even better results and I’d like to hear from you about them.

Third Fact -- Blood Flow Is NOT Equal To Different Parts Of The Body!

I remember when I was a small child that my mother told me not to go swimming immediately after eating. I understood that I would get cramps. I didn’t believe her and often went swimming soon after eating.

I never got cramps. But, NOW I can understand how it might happen.

After you eat, the body sends a lot of blood to help the stomach digest the food. That blood has to leave from some other place in the body, and the muscles are the place the blood moves away from.

When the blood leaves the muscles, going toward the stomach, your muscles can get into problems from exertion and no supply of blood.

Cramps CAN happen.

So, old mothers knew about this, even if young boys didn’t listen! Your leg muscles are the most massive of any muscle system in the body, and therefore use the most blood to keep them working. When you eat, surely there will be more blood for the stomach, and less blood for the leg muscles. THEN you can get a cramp in your legs.

The body needs for water are different for different parts of the body. For instance, the brain weighs about 2% of the total body weight of an average person, but when scientists study the circulation of blood (water) in the body, they find that the brain receives about 20% of all the blood circulation.

Science has hardly ever studied this. One brilliant doctor has. Much of the information in this Section comes from the books and research of Dr. F. Batmanghelidj.

Looking at the entire amount of blood that is pumped through the heart every day, and moves through various arteries and veins, you might have thought that it just goes where the arteries take it.

Not so! The blood moves to parts of the body on the basis of electrical and chemical messages sent out from the brain. The body can and does send more or less blood to various organs, as the body perceives the ever-changing need for blood in each area.

The brain is the most important organ in the body, as far as the design of the body is concerned. So, when the brain needs a supply of blood, the brain gets it. If the left little toe nail is turning black and you have thick skin on the soles of your feet, an increase of blood flow would help but that flow is way down the list of priorities.

What does the body do when it thinks there is a shortage of water in the brain? Chemical and electrical messages reach those valves which turn the water on or off in various places.  Go on to the next chapter about the water rationing system.

Endnote

Chapter 16

Lymph: A transparent, slightly yellow liquid of alkaline reaction, found in the lymphatic vessels and derived from the tissue fluids. It is occasionally of a light-rose color from the presence of red blood corpuscles, and is often opalescent from particles of fat. Under the microscope, lymph is seen to consist of a liquid portion and of cells, most of which are lymphocytes. Lymph is collected from all parts of the body and returned to the blood via the lymphatic system.
